Well I’ve been teaching myself HTML/CSS since the 3rd grade. I’ve built a fair number of personal sites. Tumblr is much easier than building a site from scratch though because you’re simply styling, not building.

I didn’t use anything special, just my knowledge and the “edit HTML” sandbox when you click “customize” for your theme.

Tumblr has a theming dictionary telling you what their values mean. I’d suggest you look that and that you look around and learn about html & css.

Spend a few weekends fumbling and screwing around with code and you’ll learn lots.

I don’t know of any simpler ways to create a tumblr theme. So I’m sorry if you were looking for a way to do it like that. Hope I could be of any help at all.
